Sydney Interviews Ali Fedotowsky

First winning the hearts of America on The Bachelor and then on The Bachelorette, this blonde, fashionable and smart working woman is now taking us by storm on E! News, and recently, covering the sports scene at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Ali Fedotowsky tells Style Solutions her story, including her life on-screen, love for Words With Friends and jump-roping, personal style, and more.

S: You’re an E! News Correspondent! Did you ever expect to be back on TV after The Bachelor and Bachelorette?

A: It’s truly been great. I feel really lucky to work with such talented and driven people everyday. After The Bachelor and Bachelorette, I didn’t really have a plan. I never thought I would end up on TV–I always thought I would go back to Silicon Valley and work at a startup or pursue my own business ventures. I guess I always thought I was too “normal” to be on TV.

S: You recently got back from covering the Winter Olympics. How was it?

A: Covering the Winter Olympics was one of the best experiences of my life! I met so many interesting people and felt it was a big step for me professionally. My absolute favorite moment was meeting Brian Williams. He snuck up behind me at the International Broadcasting Center and said he watched me host my old show, 1st Look, and thought I was a great host. I feel uncomfortable sharing this story like this because it sounds like I’m humble bragging, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say it was my absolute favorite moment at the Olympics. It was just incredible to me.

S: You always look great on TV which can be a challenge. Is it hard dressing for being on-screen?

A: You know how people say the camera adds 10-lbs? It’s so true! Sometimes I’ll put on an outfit for the show and think it looks great, and then I watch E! News later that day and think the outfit made me look like I gained 10-Ibs instantly. Sadly, people often come up to me on the street and are surprised to see that I’m skinny. People will say things like, “Oh my god, you’re not fat?” Mean, I know. People don’t always realize what they are saying.

S: Well you definitely don’t! Any tips or tricks for dressing on camera?

A: I try not to wear shoes that have a big ankle strap. They cut off the leg and make your leg appear shorter.

SHow do you describe your personal style?

A: Polished tom-girl. I like to wear pants on set, but I dress them up a bit. When I first started at E! I wore a lot of dresses, but lately I’ve been trying to dress more like “me” and wear pants and a nice blouse…or a skirt and a tucked-in casual shirt with a collar. So I mix a more casual piece with one that’s dressier to make the look more me, but still polished enough for E! News.

S: Your Twitter description says you’re a self-proclaimed Words With Friends master, and an avid jump roper. Details!

A: Ha! I should probably change that Twitter description. The truth is, I am horrible at spelling, so I’m really bad at Scrabble. But on Words With Friends, the app won’t let you submit a word if it’s not spelled correctly. I’m not necessarily good with words, but I’ve just spent so much time playing that I have a good strategy in the game. Or I like to tell myself I do. And here I go bragging again (kidding), but I am strangely really good at jump roping. It’s a great workout!

SSpring is officially in full swing. What are you looking forward to this season?

A: Wearing bright colors! In the fall and winter it’s all about layers and darker or more neutral colors. I’m looking forward to wearing a neon dress this spring!

S: What’s next for you?

A: For now I’m focusing on E! News and working at getting better at reporting and interviewing. Interviewing isn’t easy–it’s definitely a skill that needs to be polished and fine tuned. My job is a lot of fun, but I take it very seriously. I want to be the best reporter/host I can be!
